This blog promises to give you a Daily Dose but today, I'm giving you a weekly dose with a Freaky Friday Review loaded with pictures and anecdotes: you can't go wrong!

What is it like to be a journalist? I'll tell you!

So, I have a lot of great blog posts just waiting to be fine-tuned and completed -- so get excited about that. But this week, work spun out of control! We have  a new reporter starting at work which is so exciting; she is going to be a great fit in the office. Now, however, we are rearranging some of the beats each of us will cover. It reminded me how much I love the pressure of being a journalist. It is easy to lose sight of why we do what we do on a daily basis. This sums up my entire week. But, every once in awhile the reminder fairy comes along and gives us something to help us remember why we are where we are. Chances are you have been put in a certain situation, whether it's a hard one or an easy one, for a reason.

What is my week like as a newspaper reporter?

Monday: I call all my contacts and sources asking for interviews.
Then I go to break room for coffee refill
Wait for my phone to ring
No one calls back
Just start heading out the door for lunch, all people call me back at once
Spend afternoon asking people questions about stuff
Tuesday: sit in on meetings all day
Wednesday: drink loads of coffee before 8 a.m.
Try to write several articles
Avoid slamming head into desk
Thursday: create a newspaper
Friday: run around like crazy in the morning perfecting all of your work
Send paper to printer
Saturday: receive newspaper on doorstep
Repeat process next week.
Now this process is subject to and will likely change. In fact, my job rarely allows for any time of routine whatsoever and that's exactly what I love about my job.

Now let's converse:

How about you? What is your job like? Are you a journalist and can relate to my craziness? Share this with your fellow journalists and let's all be friends!

  1. I'm a journalism student, going into my third year at the moment. It's interesting to hear from established journalists! Do you work at a local paper?

    1. At first I was interested in print, specifically newspaper but now I'm leaning towards broadcast! Do you have any tips for a budding journalist? :)

    2. The best advice I can give you is network. It's never to early to start making connections in the business and also be willing to jump right in and try anything. It's more fun that way! :)

  3. I used to work at a newspaper! Reporters have a tough job, this one girl was always so stressed out! I always felt bad for her, but I'd always here her say she loves it anyway :D
